Falsified documents and Diploma Mills pose a threat to society, and most credential evaluation offices have procedures for controlling the authenticity of submitted documents and national regulations regarding applicants who have submitted falsified documents and documents from Diploma Mills. This session will address the importance of international cooperation and show a real-life case concerning a Diploma Mill. This session will therefore consist of two parts. International Cooperation as a way to combat falsified documents: The first part will take you through the value of international cooperation. The Norwegian Directorate for Higher Education and Skills and Swedish Council for Higher Education started an informal cooperation for credential evaluators working with falsified documents during the pandemic in 2021, and have since then shared experiences, statistics, assessments and procedures in a way that has changed how our offices deal with falsified documents. We will show the possibilities that lies within cooperation between credential evaluation offices in different countries, and what positive effects such cooperation can have for upholding the quality of credential evaluation. We will also address how verification procedures and structured police reports will result in more convictions. "Can You Take a Quick Look at this Diploma?" A Story About an Urgent E-mail and a Diploma Mill: The second part will take you through a story about University of Wolverhamton (without a 'p'), an observant employer and a credential evaluator - and a trial and a verdict. By listening to our story, you will gain insight to all the steps of this journey. We will present a particular case that started with an email from a worried employer, the process of gathering sufficient evidence to piece together a police report, and our way through the Norwegian legal system ending up in court. Throughout the story we will present documents, evidence, procedures, and finally the ups and downs met by the persons involved.
